How I saved to fund my trip

Honestly I used to spend all my wages on partying and buying new outfits for every weekend, as the years went on I still had no savings and my life was exactly the same as it was every year. Until I made a change and started saving for the best trip of my life. I worked in banking for 5 years and I was ready to give it all up and explore the world and that’s exactly what I did.

I had a savings account with my banking app but because I could transfer money out when I wanted it didn’t work for me. If I seen a new dress or fancied a night out then that was coming straight off my savings. I decided to open up a credit union account and set a direct debit of £500 per month to come off my wages this was a lot however £50 per month or whatever you can afford is still a good start. Opening a credit union was the best decision I made because I couldn’t see my savings balance online at all and if I wanted to withdraw money then I had to actually go into the branch, this made it so much easier for me to save and avoid temptation to spend my savings.

I didn’t have a large amount of money left once I had paid all my outgoings, rent and savings I had £200 per month so I limited myself to £50 per week. I’m an outgoing person so I still managed to go out mostly every weekend and do the things I wanted to do. It was tough but I knew I could do it and I knew it would be worth it to start following my dream. After 2 months of saving I decided to get a weekend job to save more money so I could start my trip ASAP. I was lucky enough to get a weekend job working as a sales assistant in a charity furniture store, I was already working in the bank Mon- Fri so committing to working 7 days a week was a tough decision but I knew it would be worth it. I worked 7 days a week for 6 months, it sounds like I had no social life right? But I promise I actually did my Saturday shift was 9-5 and my Sunday shift was 11-5 so I still had a long lie to sleep off my hangovers. In March 2018 I gave up my weekend job and I had managed to save £7000 in 8 months and I was ready to start exploring.

Before I started saving I really didn’t care about how much money I was spending my wage went so fast and I never had anything to show for it. Some people find it hard to save and let me tell you I was one of them but once you start you become use to living on a certain amount and it’s worth it. I highly encourage everyone reading this post to start saving something even if you don’t want to go travelling maybe you want to save to buy yourself something or maybe just save for a rainy day or an emergency it doesn’t matter how little or how large you save per month but it’s such a good feeling knowing your hard earned money could make such a positive impact on your life.
