If your planning to go travelling I recommend not having set dates. The reason for this is when you have set dates the cost of your trip can be really expensive. Obviously you want to go when it’s warm so research your destinations online and check the best months for sunshine. We knew we wanted to go around summer months so in Skyscanner there is an option to select cheapest month and there’s also an option to select no set destination it shows on the website as (can’t decide where?) so this is what we done we wanted to be leaving around some time in April so we searched Skyscanner for flights leaving from Glasgow/Edinburgh for the whole month of April.. and we got a one way flight from Edinburgh to Dubai for £160pp including luggage this was leaving on the 24th of April and of course we booked it. We had checked the first flight 6 months prior to our trip we didn’t know our route yet however for £160 to Dubai? Damn right we are booking it!
We then started planning our route, we got a map of the world and picked places we wanted to go our main priority was South East Asia however we also fancied India and wanted to spend a few nights in Dubai so we started putting it all together (it’s not easy we changed our route 3 or 4 times to get it right so don’t worry if you become frustrated we did too) once we got our route we started checking prices for a rough estimate we checked flight and transport prices we then decided how long to stay in each place then we started checking all our accommodation prices. We only used booking.com and air BnB for accommodation mainly because booking.com you can book hotels with 7 days free cancellation so we could start booking our hotels and not pay a penny until we arrived which was perfect for us to start confirming our route. If your going to be booking free cancellation hotels using booking.com please ensure you select the filter (free cancellation & also the filter no pre pay) if you do not select both filters then some hotels will charge you prior to your stay.
Flights – we didn’t book the rest of our flights until 2 months before we went just incase for some reason we couldn’t go! Most flights around Asia stay the same price or less so it does not really matter if you book them 6 months prior or 2 month prior you will still get a good deal. Every flight we booked was through Skyscanner it’s 100% the best website for flights.
Once we had planned our route our trip cost in total £1882. The route we planned lasted 3 months and 2 days to be exact. I have listed prices below for our 3 month trip the prices are per person.
- Accommodation £768
- Flights £621
- Transport £238
- Visa’s £255
- Total £1882
Spending Money? I took £4000 spending money I also still had direct debits to pay so I made sure I had enough money to cover them for at least 6 months so really I only had £3600 to spend and I still had £500 left at the end of my trip. It can be done cheaper however we didn’t limit our selfs to a planned budget if you do you could do it cheaper.
Travelling as couple we obviously wanted more privacy than living in bunk bed hostels for 3 months so out of our entire trip we stayed in a bunk bed in Cambodia for 1 night. Every other hotel/air BnB we booked we’re all private double or twin rooms, and to be truthful it didn’t make much of a difference in cost literally £20 difference for the full trip and we got our own privacy and proper nights sleep.
We had also got some vaccines done before travelling. Vaccines can be quite expensive we paid £500 each, it’s totally optional I know lots of travellers who haven’t had any but for me personally I didn’t want to be half way across the world and have to come home due being ill so I decided to pay the money and worry less. I have listed below the vaccines myself and Paul got. I recommend if your thinking of getting vaccines do your research on what they can help prevent and also what areas your going to be travelling in as some areas are higher risk than others. Also check with your doctor before booking into a travel clinic as some practices provide the Hep A & B for free, and if you have maybe had a tetanus vaccine before you may still be covered. I haven’t included our vaccines in the price list above because these are optional.
- Hepatitis A & Hepatitis B
- Rabies
- Typhoid
- Tetanus
- Japanese encephalitis
